I could be called a late bloomer, if you define "blooming" by my professional career. My dream of going to college and becoming a professional was put on hold while I enjoyed being a partner to my husband and watching our four children grow into wonderful adults.

I was in my 30's when my two oldest children encouraged me to become a volunteer with Aunt Martha's Youth Services, Inc. in Park Forest, Illinois. I worked in the drop-in center and then became a member of their training team. Through Aunt Martha's I was trained in Reality Therapy, a method of counseling developed in 1965 by William Glasser, MD. I found that I enjoyed working with people and decided to formally pursue the college education that I had always wanted.

I earned an Associates degree in Mental Health from Prairie State College. I continued my education at Governors State University, earning a Bachelors degree in Psychology, a Masters degree in Communication Studies, and a Masters degree in Counseling. I am currently pursuing my doctorate in Counselor Education from Northern Illinois University.

During this time , I continued to volunteer with Aunt Martha's, and also became an active member of The William Glasser Institute. With the support of Aunt Martha's, I became Reality Therapy Certified, and am now a Senior Faculty member of The William Glasser Institute. I have had the privilege of teaching Glasser's work in the areas of education, counseling, corrections, addictions, and health services, and to individuals who are interested in learning these ideas for their own personal and professional development. In addition to my work with these two organizations, I put my counseling skills into practice as a contractual staff member at Oak Lawn Family Services, a community agency in Oak Lawn, Illinois.

I am thrilled that I can now call myself a faculty member of Governors State University. In 2003 I was invited to teach as adjunct faculty in the counseling program, and then was asked to join the faculty as a full-time lecturer. It is exciting to teach in the program area that I enjoy so much. I appreciate the dedication of our students, many of whom juggle careers, family and education. While I am teaching, I also learn so much from them!

I am excited to be engaged in the Adventures of the American Mind program. I hope that participants in this site enjoy the opportunity to think about the influence of culture on how we think and who we become!
