I have a commission from the Lord God Almighty to do all I can for every miserable creature who comes in my way; he is always sure of two friends, God and me.
---Mother Bickerdyke.
Abstract: Mary Ann Bickerdyke was one of the Civil War's most celebrated personalities, but is largely unknown, even in her home state of Illinois and among medical professionals. She was a healer and social activist who was infamous during and following the war for effectively caring for thousands of wounded soldiers. Affectionally called "Mother" by soldiers, Bickerdyke stood up to Army ineptitude and bureaucracy to heal the sick and improve conditions for her "boys". Using primary source materials and published articles and book, participants will enjoy learning about this important Illinois medical pioneer.
