Teacher’s Guide- Lesson Plans-Emotions Preparation: Audio Clips Student Page - Emotions Materials: Chart of pictures with a range of emotions. Student Writer's Notebooks. Procedure: Talk about emotions as an important part of a narrative story. Discuss how characters experience often a range of emotions during a story. Show an emotions chart and review some of the basic emotions. If children think of other emotions,make a list and attach to the chart. Tell the students they will listen to audio clips of narrative stories and they will need to identify the emotions. Have students share and recall times when they felt particular emotions. Explain that those memories often make for interesting narrative stories. Children can add new ideas to their My Ideas for Writing list. Have children continue to work in Writers' Workshop. Again, each student will be at a different step in the process. At this time, the revising step is introduced. Ask them to focus on emotions while writing. Closure: At the end of the writing session, share several examples of student writing that exemplify the use of emotions. Follow-up: Continue to focus on using emotions to help guide their writing. Use texts from the Resources Page to provide other examples. Also, begin to revise student writing using student examples on the overhead.
