Lesson One: Introduction to Narrative Writing

Note: This sequence of lessons is to be taught within the Writers’ Workshop format. View the Powerpoint Presentation for more information on Writers' Workshop.

Preparation: Audio Clips of Stories to introduce the idea of telling a story about an event that is important to them. See Student Page - Significant Event

Materials: Student Writer's notebooks and Handout - My Ideas for Writing

Procedure:

Mini-lesson : Main Idea - Narrative writing tells a story about a significant or an important event.

Listen to audio clips of signifcant events from Student page - Significant Event. Discuss how each clip exemplifies a significant event in the person's life.

Children share with partners events that are significant or important to them.

Children generate a written list of life events important to them using handout. (Think- Step One of the Writing Process) (Handout - My Ideas for Writing)

Closure: Whole group sharing of ideas listed. This sharing time may give other students ideas to add to their lists.
