Evaluation and Assessment

Materials:

Narrative Writing Rubric - First Grade Narrative Writing Rubric - Scaffolding Young Writers - A Writers' Workshop Approach by Linda Dorn and Carla Soffos. Stenhouse Publishers. (2001)

Writing Log - This log is used to keep track of each piece of writing. A date is written in the corresponding cell when each step is completed. Children are reminded that that not all pieces of writing will reach the final stages of revising, editing, and publishing. Some pieces of writing may be abandoned.

Daily Ongoing Assessment- During Writers' Workshop students learn to self-revise and self-edit. Checklists can help students to review their own work. Through mini-lessons teachers develop with students checklists for revising (meaning) and for editing (spelling, punctuation, and grammar). Some example checklists are included. Revising Checklist, Editing Checklist
