Journey Along the Underground Railroad
Lesson 4
Art
Lesson:
The class will listen to, then discuss a short story about runaway slaves escaping to freedom. Then the class will go on the internet to view the following: Quilt Patterns--hidden messages to slaves *
On your sheet of scrap paper design your quilt pattern. Your pattern may use two or more of the following: squares, rectangles, triangles or circles. Remember that your pattern must repeat itself and cover the entire page just as it would on a piece of fabric. What is the message that your quilt is sending to the runaway slaves that might see it? On the other side of your scrap paper decide, then write what your pattern means. Once you have decided on your pattern and your colors ask for construction paper and share the markers and colored pencils. Work carefully. When you have finished coloring glue this quilt pattern sheet onto the larger piece of construction paper. Leave room at the bottom of the page to neatly write your message.
