Time Required: 5-7 days, 30 minutes each day
Materials: Social Studies textbook, printed texts, linked websites, Library of Congress primary sources, computer with internet access, paper, markers, pencils, yarn, hole punch
Vocabulary Words: slave, Underground Railroad, runaway, safe house, station, conductor, slave states, free states, plantation, slave auction, bounty hunter
Procedure and Activities: To begin the lesson, the teacher will have the students look at a picture of a slave auction and a father being taken away from his family. This introduction will begin a discussion about slavery in the United States. Then, the students will be introduced to one special slave named Harriet Tubman. The students will research Harriet Tubman through a variety of resources. They will work in partners to find information about her and create a PowerPoint presentation about her life. The partners will share their presentation with the class. Then, students will work on their own to design a quilt block with a picture that depicts an important event in Harriet Tubman's life. The quilt blocks will be put together to create a class quilt.
Assessment and Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on the products they create and their participation within their group. Rubrics will be used to assess products and participation.
