Women Physicians: A Treasure Hunt

Abstract: The exhibit features women in medicine. It honors their lives and achievements. Some women physicians have helped the field of surgery by developing innovative procedures, while others have won the Nobel prize. Some women physicians have focused their attention on the health and well-being of children. Others have concentrated on the art of healing and the roles of culture and spirituality in medicine.

Grade Level(s): Middle school and older. This is intended for anyone interested in learning more about women physicians.

Time required to complete project: 1 hour (however, once started, users may be easily side-tracked by the wealth of information found within the resources).

Content: The goal of this exercise is to introduce the user to resources that they may never have the occasion to visit. Another goal is to allow the user to opportunity to get lost on the Library of Congress' website and find other items of interest.

Process: The treasure hunt is arranged not only to introduce the user to various women physicians, but to also provide practice in online search. The user may work independently or as a group.

Product: At the end of the Treasure Hunt, the user will be more knowledgeable about the women physicians in our history and the many ways in which women have influenced the practice of medicine. Within the last couple of decades, the development of the Internet has opened many avenues of learning providing access to resources and materials that were only availabe to a limited few.

Alignment with standards: This project is in alignment with several of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards. Specifically, the following standards: 1L. Facilitates learning experiences that make connections to other content areas and to life and career experiences. 3G. Facilitates a learning community in which individual differences are respected. 4G. Understands how to use various technological tools to access and manage information. 4Q. Uses teaching resources and materials which have been evaluated for accuracy and usefulness.

Assessment and evaluation: Users will be assessed by the number of questions answered correctly. Answers may be obtained from more than one location within the Library of Congress American Memories website. Users should be given extra consideration for their ability to demonstrate their use of the resources.

Materials needed: The materials needed include an Internet connected computer, and access to the Governors State University Library.
