Teaching with Primary Sources

Race and Ethnicity in the American West

Project Overview

During my childhood I thought of “Cowboys and Indians” as a game boys played. I had no idea that between the games and the television shows that cowboys and Indians actually existed. This unit is designed for elementary students, to inform will explore that not only are and were there REAL cowboys and Indians, but the West as we know it today was largely settled by more than 5,000 African-Americans.
