Visual Literacy Activity 4:

How can I purposefully use visual literacy in the classroom?

3 . Pick a Photo to "Apply or Use"

You are going to use the materials in American Memory to design an activity relating to Harvey. Create an assignment that asks students to select, organize, arrange, label, or tell a story using visuals. For example, students might create a photo essay or collage. They might also describe the place or make comparisons.

4. Pick a Photo to "Design"

Practice your design skills by cropping, extracting, modifying, or transforming an existing visual. We will have several different software programs available for use: Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop Elements, and KidPix Studio Deluxe.

Choose one or more of the Harvey photographs. Try one of the following ideas:

  • Combine photos together
    • Find a photo of a person and add your head with a digital picture of yourself.
    • Put yourself into a historical photo.
    • Combine a photo of Harvey today with Harvey of the past.
    • Find a photo of a place you'd like to travel and add your picture to the scene.
  • Choose one new imaging tool menu item to learn and incorporate it into an activity such as brightness, contrast, cropping, or filters.
  • Explore file formats, compressing, and resizing options as you change a photo.
  • Make an old photo of Harvey look new or a new photo of Harvey look old .
If you have extra time---Just for fun, look at Worth1000 for ideas of what graphic artists have created. These graphics are the work of individuals who have spent a long time with graphic design.

Ideas inspired by Annette Lamb on her website: Visual Literacy Using Web-based Photo Resources.
