Visual Literacy Activity 1:

What is Visual Literacy?

In order to prepare our students for the 21st Century and its demands, we must prepare our students to use visual information more effectively. Visual literacy was not as important in the 1900's as it is today and will be for the future. Why do you think that is or isn't true? Let's read about and discuss this important skill.

1. First, let's see how much we know about visual literacy. Meet with your group and do KWL Graphic Organizer on visual literacy. What do you know about visual literacy and what do you want to learn? Only do the K and W sections before the reading assignment. If you wish to type into the form, use the Word verion. If you cannot open that version or wish to print it out and write in it, use the pdf version.

If you need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to open the pdf version, you can get it here.
2. Read online the following articles in jigsaw fashion. Divide the reading so that each of you reads one section of the readings and then comes back to the group as an expert on that section. Be sure to take the available time to click on the hyperlinks.

3. Discuss your sections and then together complete the L section of the KWL sharing what you have learned.

4. Be ready to share your results with the whole group.
