I was a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) when it was located on the famous Navy Pier. Unfortunately, I dropped out of college after only one year and began a varied work career. I was a daycare worker, a bank teller, a lunchmeat slicer, a cashier, a secretary, and a supervisor at a newspaper. Although the jobs were different, they held one similiarity for me. I was always chosen to train the new employees.  Eventually I realized that teaching...no matter what the topic or skill...was my favorite part of every job. I returned to UIC as a full-time student. I graduated in 1987 with a BA in Education. It was exactly twenty years after I would have graduated had I not dropped out!
This is my fifteenth year teaching in Illinois School District 130. I have taught 3rd and 4th grades as well as 6th, 7th and 8th. At the middle school level I have taught both math and science, and currently I am teaching 6th grade math.  The best decision of my life was to return to college.

  Tyrone Norvell

My name is Tyrone Norvell and I'm currently a sixth grade teacher at Nathan Hale Middle School. I have been teaching at the middle school level for seven years. I enjoy working with students, especially when knowing that I have contributed to their learning experience. I believe that all students have the right to learn and should be challenged quite often, in order to further their learning experience. One thing that makes me feel proud of the field that I'm in, is when I see former students of mine, and they thank me for something that I may have said or done that have inspired them in the past. It is true when people say, "Teachers touch lives forever." In closing, I would like to leave you with one piece of advice: READ ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING! Every time you read an article or report, you'll always learn something new. Don't be afraid to venture out and try something new. The world is full of endless and exciting adventures!
