Teacher's Lesson Plan Page

This is a two to three week lesson for third grade students, that uses primary sources from the Library of Congress, to investigate significant people in Illinois history.

1. Introduce the students to the website and show them how to navigate the site.

2. The students will view the PowerPoint Presentation.
They may work in pairs or individually.

3. Students will print out a copy of the notetaking sheet and view the PowerPoint again taking notes on the individuals. They will use their notes to decide why I included these ten individuals. They will write a paragraph explaining the significance of these people in Illinois History. They may use a word processor or paper and pencil to write their paragraph.

4. The students will obtain a copy of the Significant People Quiz from you. It is linked from the teacher page.

5. The students will then research a significant individual that has influenced the history of Illinois from the list provided on Lesson 3. Research questions are provided for the students to use to guide their research. They must use primary as well as secondary sources. Links are provided for the students to guide them in their quest.

6. The students will use the information that they have gathered to make a presentation to their classmates. They may write an expository essay, prepare a PowerPoint presentation, or an Inspiration presentation. I have provided an outline to follow for the essay and a rubric that will be used to score it. In addition, I have included a rubric to follow for the PowerPoint and Inspiration presentation.
